And so we begin…
Urban Yogis UK was officially set up 4 years ago by two Yoga teachers from the UK that wanted to make a difference in todays society. Helen McCabe and Scott Johnson both knew from personal experience that Yoga can be life changing and that this accent tradition can be a tool for all people to utilise.
The Urban Yogis lineage started in New York, the programme was set up in Queens area in response to the high levels of serious violence and exploitation, the aim was to support the communities trauma by offering free yoga classes to all. They were taught in basketball courts, schools and community spaces. After a short period young people and adults from the community became regular Yogis and they then got the opportunity to become teachers through a teacher development programme. Today Urban Yogis New York works closely with the Life Foundation and other community groups in sharing Yoga all over the city.
In January 2020, Urban Yogis UK decided to change management due to the growing need to increase the support they offer to the community and develop the existing ideas. Adam Ballard and Ben Eckett with the support of the Urban Yogis team will now develop the organisation. Adam and Ben have over 25 years of experience in youth work, social care, youth offending, education, sports coaching and managing community interest companies. They both share the passion and motivation to share Yoga and build a brighter future for all young people and communities.
It’s exciting time with Urban Yogis UK with the aspect of new programmes in schools, communities, prisons and life changing residential trips for young people. They’re linking in closely with other successful youth organisations and will be supported by brands such as Nike and Soweflow.
Its always important to know your roots and Urban Yogis celebrate their rich lineage, it’s going to be exciting times ahead so keep a close eye on the updates.
Namaste
